They then released a number of Windows Updates that displays annoying messages on your desktop telling you that your operating system is now at its end of life. This is the Windows message: The second is the Microsoft Security Essentials one: We have been asked a number of times about how to remove these and we have now created a new utility that will help you to do this. (Download at bottom of page) CONSIDERATIONS There is one problem with removing the Microsoft Security Essentials end of life message. If you have already installed Version 4.5.216.0 then you cannot remove this message. Also, eventually, your system will update to this version so the best thing to do is to uninstall MSE and install another free anti-virus like Avast or Avira. If you have not yet installed Version 4.5.216.0 then this utility will work for you for the MSE part. The Windows end of life message should be able to be removed without issue using this utility. You must have Dot Net 2.0 installed for this to work. INSTRUCTIONS Once you have downloaded the file you should run the executable file to start the utility. You will then be presented with a utility that looks like this: You should then click the buttons on the right hand side in relation to what you want to do. So, if you want to remove the Windows message, click the top button, if you want to remove the MSE message, click the bottom button. Futures updates of this notification tool will (officialy) setup the connection rate to once every two weeks. Once the WGA Notification tool has checked your OS and has confirmed you had a legit copy, there is no decent point or reason to check it again and again every boot. Moreover, connecting to Microsoft brings security issue for corporate networks, and privacy issues for everyone. It is also unclear which information are transmitted (Microsoft published an official answer, but an individual study brought some questions). All of that, along the fact that Microsoft used deceptive ways to make you install this tool (it was told you it was an urgent security update, whereas it is a new installation giving you no extra security) makes me calling this tool a spyware. Also, Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is different than Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. RemoveWGA only removes the notification part, phoning home, and does not touch the Validation part. Note: Some antivirus and antispyware programs flag RemoveWGA as being infected/malware, although the application is perfectly safe and does not pose a threat to your system. Repair Tasks v3.3 Repair Tasks v3.3 This project is a utility that makes repairs to the Windows Task schedule. In particular, it fixes problems where opening the Task Scheduler, or trying to configure Windows Backup, results in the message "The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with" (0x80041321). Searching the web reveals that this message has been seen from time to time, and the (rather laborious) set of steps that can be taken to correct it are fairly well-documented. However, it turns out that reverting to Windows 7 from Windows 10 generates this problem in spades. It can leave more than 40 scheduled tasks in a corrupt state. This is because many task registry keys and the task definitions to which they refer are updated by a Windows 10 upgrade, but only the registry keys are restored on reversion, so Task Scheduler finds that, for these tasks, the task registry keys and task definitions are now inconsistent. The general recommendation in response to this reversion problem seems to be to restore the system from backups. However, I'm never sure about overwriting chunks of my system from backups, and would rather go forwards. So, since the fix is well-known, and the main problem is just repeated execution, I decided to write a utility to automate the set of steps required. And now, I'm sharing my work in case it is of use to fellow sufferers, pending Microsoft getting their act together and fixing reversion. Router Default Password v1.0 Router Default Password v1.0 Every device connected to a network must have an unique IP address to differentiate it from the others. An IP address is similar to the unique telephone number on your home phone or mobile device. No other device on your network (unless you are using NAT) will have the same IP address. In order for a sending device to transmit data to a receiving device, the sender needs to know where the destination is. The destination will either be on the same subnetwork as the source, or on some other subnetwork. If the devices are in the same subnet, the mechanism used to determine the location of the destination device is the broadcast. But what happens if they are on different networks? This is where the default gateway comes into play. The default gateway is used as the destination of all traffic that is not on the same subnet. You might need to know the IP address of the default gateway if theres a network problem or if you need to make changes to your router. In Microsoft Windows, the IP address of a computers default gateway can be accessed through Command Prompt with the ipconfig command, as well as through the Control Panel. The netstat and ip route commands are used on macOS and Linux for finding the default gateway address. If you havent bothered to go in and make changes to your network settings, you may find that you can still access the admin panel using that information. Secret v1.0 Secret v1.0 SECRET is a command line encryption tool for Windows, MacOS and Linux. It comes as a standalone binary file which does not need installation. Copy the file to some path and run it from there. SECRET is very easy to use and can handle encryption of very large files. It supports all file types. SECRET also allows you to encrypt directories with ease, even recursively. Note that on Linux you need to give SECRET binary execution permissions before you can use it. Examples These examples are for Windows, on MacOS or on Linux they are the same except the SECRET binary does not have .exe extension. Note that SECRET has built-in help function which you can call by using SECRET.exe help. File encryption: SECRET.exe encrypt -f /path/to/some/file.txt delete This example would encrypt file.txt , rename it to file.txt.secret and after the enc ryption delete the original file (file.txt) File decryption: SECRET.exe decrypt -f /path/to/some/file.txt.secret delete This example would de crypt file.txt .secret , rename it to file.txt and after the enc ryption delete the original encrypted file (file.txt .sec ret Directory encryption: SECRET.exe encrypt -d /path/to/some/test-dir --recursive Here were encrypting directory test-dir with recursive flag. So all directories under test-dir will be encrypted too. How SECRET works is that it goes through all the files in the directory and encrypting them one by one. Without delete flag SECRET will leave original files intact, useful for testing and for cases where you do want to keep the original files too.
