When your computer runs out of memory (RAM), Windows keeps things running by pretending that a reserved area of your hard drive is RAM. All of the information your that Windows and you programs generate is stored in a single file called pagefile.sys in this reserved area. This file can grow to be several gigabytes in size and does not get deleted when your computer is shutdown. Not only does this use up a sizable chunk of your hard drive, it also opens you up to skilled individuals retrieving this information from your hard drive. PreventPageFileSnoops changes a single registry value to force Windows to delete the pagefile.sys file when you shutdown your computer. AllowPageFileSnoops sets this value back to its default (do not delete pagefile.sys on shutdown). KEEP IN MIND Since the pagefile.sys is sometimes huge and depending on the speed of your computer and hard drive, it could take a few minutes to shut down your computer with this enabled. INSTRUCTIONS (Note: You may not get asked all of these questions.) 1) Double or single click on PreventPageFileSnoops.reg 2) On the Security Warning window, click RUN. 3) When asked "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your computer?", choose YES. 4) When asked "Adding information can unintentionally change or delete values and cause... Privacy Badger was born out of our desire to be able to recommend a single extension that would automatically analyze and block any tracker or ad that violated the principle of user consent; which could function well without any settings, knowledge, or configuration by the user; which is produced by an organization that is unambiguously working for its users rather than for advertisers; and which uses algorithmic methods to decide what is and isn’t tracking. This program is powered by my service ID Ransomware, and thus is always updated with definitions on the latest known ransomwares and their ransom notes. This also allows it to be flexible in detecting the ransom notes, as it uses the exact same data ID Ransomware uses for identifying variants. When RansomNoteCleaner is first launched, it will contact the website, and pull down the latest information on known ransom notes; this is the only network activity done with the program, and no information about your system is uploaded or stored at all. If you have a network issue with reaching the website, the "Refresh Network" button is available to try again. Clicking the "Select Ransomware(s)" button allows for selecting the exact variant(s) to clean ransom notes from. This is recommended if you have already identified the ransomware, as it will take much less time to search for the notes. Once the ransomware variant(s) have been confirmed, you may press the "Search for Ransom Notes" button to select a directory (or whole drive), and start the search for known ransom notes. Once the scan has completed, the "Clean!" button will be available. A final window will display all found ransom notes before continuing with deletion. I highly recommend double-checking the file list before confirming the deletion. I am not responsible for loss of data if you confirm this step.
