Features • Small • Portable • Secure Note from the author: I made a simple gui as a front end to the OpenSSL command line encryption tools, and as a little side project, wanted to make a password locker to integrate into that util. I never did, as I started using this util at work for database and web logins and the like, (I don't like password managers as browser plug-ins, any more than I like GPG email plug-ins), and so this remained just a tiny little password locker. Usage: It's pretty straight forward, the first time you run it, you will need to create a password to access the password database. After that, the same dialog will come up, but without the second "repeat password" line. Additionally, each time you login, you'll be asked if you're using an SSD, this makes a difference in how the database is closed. On a normal HDD, the "shred" utility is run to completely wipe the unencrypted database file, while on an SSD, it simply uses the UNIX / Linux "rm" command to remove the file. While shredding the file is far more secure, SSD's are far less secure by design; shred will accomplish nothing besides shortening the lifespan of the SSD. Karl M. Syring has made available a large suite of UNIX utilities ported to Windows, and two of these that are called by OSLC Password Locker are the aforementioned shred and rm, called by the Windows version as rm.exe and shred.exe. These must remain in the same directory as pwr-WIN.exe, or in the path. In contrary to other projects, PhotoFilmStrip has the opportunity to render slide show in Full-HD (1920x1080) resolution. Ping Tracer v1.9 Ping Tracer v1.9 Ping Tracer continuously pings each network host between your computer and a given destination, helping identify the source of connectivity problems. This program helps to visually determine the origin of connection problems. The latency over time is shown on graphs, and each instance of packet loss is marked in red. A common use for such a tool is to monitor your connection to a multiplayer game server so you know who to blame when you experience lag. For example, if you experience a terrible moment of lag and you see that every node beyond your router is showing elevated latency or packet loss, then the lag was on your end. Typically, a poorly performing node will affect your connection to every node after it. I built this program for personal use, and decided to share it for free as an open source project. As such, it is light on features and polish. Something you should be aware of is that when you attempt to "Graph every node leading to the destination", a trace route operation is performed in order to discover the hosts that will be monitored. The trace route operation is not optimized for speed, and will take many seconds to complete in most cases. The trace route operation attempts to contact each host (a.k.a. network node) only once. Any host that fails to respond during the trace route operation will not be monitored. The trace route operation is ended if 5 consecutive hosts fail to respond. Repair Tasks v3.3 Repair Tasks v3.3 This project is a utility that makes repairs to the Windows Task schedule. In particular, it fixes problems where opening the Task Scheduler, or trying to configure Windows Backup, results in the message "The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with" (0x80041321). Searching the web reveals that this message has been seen from time to time, and the (rather laborious) set of steps that can be taken to correct it are fairly well-documented. However, it turns out that reverting to Windows 7 from Windows 10 generates this problem in spades. It can leave more than 40 scheduled tasks in a corrupt state. This is because many task registry keys and the task definitions to which they refer are updated by a Windows 10 upgrade, but only the registry keys are restored on reversion, so Task Scheduler finds that, for these tasks, the task registry keys and task definitions are now inconsistent. The general recommendation in response to this reversion problem seems to be to restore the system from backups. However, I'm never sure about overwriting chunks of my system from backups, and would rather go forwards. So, since the fix is well-known, and the main problem is just repeated execution, I decided to write a utility to automate the set of steps required. And now, I'm sharing my work in case it is of use to fellow sufferers, pending Microsoft getting their act together and fixing reversion. Open source is particularly appropriate for this type of project, as the code necessarily delves into system settings, making complete transparency as to what it does crucial.
