Over the last 10 years or so, several projects have been started to bring back Commander Zod to live on modern technology. One of them was the Zod Engine by FreakNigh (Nighsoft). The Zod Engine is a great contribution to the community and brought us all back to those days again. Based on the Zod Engine, DaMarkov started a fork called “Zed Online” and continued the development by adding a user interface, online multiplayer support and much more. Other contributors, including the ZZone, joined DaMarkov in his endeavor to bring back the game to the fans. And back it is! Online Multiplayer - Port forwarding In order to connect online the player who creates the game needs to enable port forwarding on their network router/NAT. The game will use port 8000 TCP. If the game can not bind the server to port 8000 it will try the next port until 8009. We recommend to forward all ports 8000-8009 TCP or at least ports 8000-8002. UPnP (Universal Plug&Play) support When starting the game the program makes a list of all network interfaces, takes the first one, tries to find the router and enable port forwarding on port 8000 to your machine. This means if you are connected to only one network where the router has UPnP enabled and you can open port 8000 on your machine you don't need to setup port forwarding manually anymore. If the game could open port 8000 sucessfully you will see the message "UPNP: Enabled" in the game lobby. It has been developed into an exact replica of the NES version that we all know and love. Beyond that, Zelda Classic allows the development of new quests that can use either the traditional graphics or enhanced graphics, as well as new enemies, items, and challenges. Though it started as a basic Legend of Zelda clone by programmer Phantom Menace in April of 1999, Zelda Classic has grown into something much bigger in the past few years. A full LOZ replica was achieved by June of 2000, with Zelda Classic version 1.84, but the story didn’t end there. Although Phantom Menace moved on to other projects, Fans of Zelda Classic wanted more. Fast forward to after about a year of searching for a new programmer, when Dark Nation comes to Armageddon Games, and breathes new life into what seemed like a dying beast. Within weeks, a new version of Zelda Classic is released, and it’s popularity soars. Zelda Classic 1.90, introduced a list of new features, and with it’s addition to Download.com, Armageddon Games is flooded with about 3000+ new members, and over a million downloads in a matter of months! Zelda Classic has since been released as open source and has current stable ports on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. Development continues to this day with new features still being added. Technical details ZEROFILL has been specially optimized to run on pure DOS enviroments, no matter if the are on the top of physical machines, or virtual machines. Even if FAT32 partitions are not explicitilly supported, its 64 bit arithmetic should make it support volumes of up to 256 GB in size, depending if DOS is able to properly inform about it on service 36h.
