If an advertiser seems to be tracking you across multiple websites without your permission, Privacy Badger automatically blocks that advertiser from loading any more content in your browser. To the advertiser, it’s like you suddenly disappeared. How is Privacy Badger different from Disconnect, Adblock Plus, Ghostery, and other blocking extensions? Privacy Badger was born out of our desire to be able to recommend a single extension that would automatically analyze and block any tracker or ad that violated the principle of user consent; which could function well without any settings, knowledge, or configuration by the user; which is produced by an organization that is unambiguously working for its users rather than for advertisers; and which uses algorithmic methods to decide what is and isn’t tracking. Although we like Disconnect, Adblock Plus, Ghostery and similar products, none of them are exactly what we were looking for. In our testing, all of them required some custom configuration to block non-consensual trackers. Several of these extensions have business models that we weren’t entirely comfortable with. And EFF hopes that by developing rigorous algorithmic and policy methods for detecting and preventing non-consensual tracking, we’ll produce a codebase that could in fact be adopted by those other extensions, or by mainstream browsers, to give users maximal control over who does and doesn’t get to know what they do online. They then released a number of Windows Updates that displays annoying messages on your desktop telling you that your operating system is now at its end of life. This is the Windows message: The second is the Microsoft Security Essentials one: We have been asked a number of times about how to remove these and we have now created a new utility that will help you to do this. (Download at bottom of page) CONSIDERATIONS There is one problem with removing the Microsoft Security Essentials end of life message. If you have already installed Version 4.5.216.0 then you cannot remove this message. Also, eventually, your system will update to this version so the best thing to do is to uninstall MSE and install another free anti-virus like Avast or Avira. If you have not yet installed Version 4.5.216.0 then this utility will work for you for the MSE part. The Windows end of life message should be able to be removed without issue using this utility. You must have Dot Net 2.0 installed for this to work. INSTRUCTIONS Once you have downloaded the file you should run the executable file to start the utility. You will then be presented with a utility that looks like this: You should then click the buttons on the right hand side in relation to what you want to do. So, if you want to remove the Windows message, click the top button, if you want to remove the MSE message, click the bottom button. Once you have done this, you should reboot your machine and you should now notice that the messages have not reappeared. |

Repair Tasks v3.3 Repair Tasks v3.3 This project is a utility that makes repairs to the Windows Task schedule. In particular, it fixes problems where opening the Task Scheduler, or trying to configure Windows Backup, results in the message "The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with" (0x80041321). Searching the web reveals that this message has been seen from time to time, and the (rather laborious) set of steps that can be taken to correct it are fairly well-documented. However, it turns out that reverting to Windows 7 from Windows 10 generates this problem in spades. It can leave more than 40 scheduled tasks in a corrupt state. This is because many task registry keys and the task definitions to which they refer are updated by a Windows 10 upgrade, but only the registry keys are restored on reversion, so Task Scheduler finds that, for these tasks, the task registry keys and task definitions are now inconsistent. The general recommendation in response to this reversion problem seems to be to restore the system from backups. However, I'm never sure about overwriting chunks of my system from backups, and would rather go forwards. So, since the fix is well-known, and the main problem is just repeated execution, I decided to write a utility to automate the set of steps required. And now, I'm sharing my work in case it is of use to fellow sufferers, pending Microsoft getting their act together and fixing reversion. In this version we have redesigned the main window to look better on modern high resolution displays and introduced the new smart terminal mode that greatly boosts the productivity of work done over SSH by extending the normal terminal experience with a few useful graphical elements: In this post I will give you an overview of the new features. Windows-like Command Line Editing The text editing experience in a Linux console is different from editing a text document in a Windows editor like Notepad++: different keyboard shortcuts, limited mouse support, and small annoyances like line breaks interfering with copy/pasting commands. We decided to solve this once and for all and added a new Smart Tab mode to SmarTTY 3.0. Unlike the regular SSH tabs where SmarTTY simply forwards your keyboard and mouse events to the Linux system and expects it to handle them, Smart Tabs work in a more clever way. When a Smart Tab is open, SmarTTY will understand whether you are editing a command line, or running a command via SSH. When you are editing a command line, smart tabs will offer you the regular Windows text editing experience with selecting words via Ctrl+Shift+Arrow, using mouse to move the cursor, undo/redo shortcuts, etc. SmarTTY knows exactly where the command line area starts and the output of the previous command ends and won’t let you accidentally cross that boundary. The reset action usually takes place after a Windows update or an update of one of the Windows built-in apps such as Microsoft Edge, Photos or Groove Music. It may also be caused by a third party program. Default apps are the programs that are executed by default when you open a file or protocol. Resetting them without your consent can be extremely unconvenient, because it can take a lot of work to set them up again. Stop Resetting My Apps helps you to work around this issue by preventing some of those built-in apps from being set as the default apps. This does not affect the functionality of those apps. How it works Stop Resetting My Apps was designed to be straight forward and does not require any expertise. You just need to click or tap the tile of the built-in app you want to block. To unblock an app, just click or tap its tile again. Changes are instantly applied. When an app is blocked, it can not be set as the default app for any file extension or protocol. Stop Resetting My Apps will then display an icon overlay over that app's tile, allowing you to easily identify which apps are currently blocked. The icon overlay looks like this: Apps whose tile has the overlay are blocked, apps without the overlay are not blocked. Still not sure of what to block? Just block all the apps you don't use.
