They then released a number of Windows Updates that displays annoying messages on your desktop telling you that your operating system is now at its end of life. This is the Windows message: The second is the Microsoft Security Essentials one: We have been asked a number of times about how to remove these and we have now created a new utility that will help you to do this. (Download at bottom of page) CONSIDERATIONS There is one problem with removing the Microsoft Security Essentials end of life message. If you have already installed Version 4.5.216.0 then you cannot remove this message. Also, eventually, your system will update to this version so the best thing to do is to uninstall MSE and install another free anti-virus like Avast or Avira. If you have not yet installed Version 4.5.216.0 then this utility will work for you for the MSE part. The Windows end of life message should be able to be removed without issue using this utility. Repair Tasks v3.3 Repair Tasks v3.3 This project is a utility that makes repairs to the Windows Task schedule. In particular, it fixes problems where opening the Task Scheduler, or trying to configure Windows Backup, results in the message "The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with" (0x80041321). Searching the web reveals that this message has been seen from time to time, and the (rather laborious) set of steps that can be taken to correct it are fairly well-documented. However, it turns out that reverting to Windows 7 from Windows 10 generates this problem in spades. It can leave more than 40 scheduled tasks in a corrupt state. This is because many task registry keys and the task definitions to which they refer are updated by a Windows 10 upgrade, but only the registry keys are restored on reversion, so Task Scheduler finds that, for these tasks, the task registry keys and task definitions are now inconsistent. The general recommendation in response to this reversion problem seems to be to restore the system from backups. However, I'm never sure about overwriting chunks of my system from backups, and would rather go forwards. So, since the fix is well-known, and the main problem is just repeated execution, I decided to write a utility to automate the set of steps required. And now, I'm sharing my work in case it is of use to fellow sufferers, pending Microsoft getting their act together and fixing reversion. So, when we set ourselves the task of creating a novel way of detecting, disabling and removing RATs, we didn't want to take the route every other anti-virus company has done before us. Phrozen Software studied the behaviour of RATs and discovered that hackers virtually always use a technique called RunPE. This technique spawns a legitimate process – often the default browser or a Microsoft system process – and replace it with a malicious program code directly in memory. The reset action usually takes place after a Windows update or an update of one of the Windows built-in apps such as Microsoft Edge, Photos or Groove Music. It may also be caused by a third party program. Default apps are the programs that are executed by default when you open a file or protocol. Resetting them without your consent can be extremely unconvenient, because it can take a lot of work to set them up again. Stop Resetting My Apps helps you to work around this issue by preventing some of those built-in apps from being set as the default apps. This does not affect the functionality of those apps. How it works Stop Resetting My Apps was designed to be straight forward and does not require any expertise. You just need to click or tap the tile of the built-in app you want to block. To unblock an app, just click or tap its tile again. Changes are instantly applied. When an app is blocked, it can not be set as the default app for any file extension or protocol. It also doesn't create virtual pipes to redirect output/input buffers (stdout ; stdin ; stderror) to capture send and capture terminal commands. The reason we don’t use both above methods is due to the instability of such methods. Very basically, we do not emulate the Windows Terminal at all, but we use the real one. We Patch the window and associated messages and embed it into our own frame.
