In case the header of a JPEG file is corrupt you will not be able to open or view the the file. A JPEG header only represents a tiny amount of the file and that corruption may be beyond this header. For JPGRepair to work the actual image bitstream needs to be detectable. This means JPGRepair needs to find the SOS and EOI markers within the corrupt image. SOS: Start of Scan, “FF DA” in hex. EOI: End if Image, “FF D9” in hex. JPGRepair also repairs invalid markers within the actual image stream. For this it does not depend on a reference file. Free version is functional except for the batch mode being disabled. Example Repair This after repair example file had both a corrupt header and invalid JPEG markers in the image bit stream. Data will be overwritten several times e.g. using the US DoD 5220.22-M ( ECE ) erasure method. Using File Shredder you can delete files and documents from your hard drive and must not worry about that they could be recovered anytime later. Software tools offered for retrieval of deleted files under Windows, usually called "file recovery" software, are taking advantage of the shortcoming of the Windows "delete" command we are normally using to delete files. In fact, the "delete" operation in Windows only removes some bits of information from file directories so that the files disappear from thefile manager view. To undelete such a file, it is just necessary to repair the entry in the file directory. To remove files permanently from your system, like a shredder does with your paper documents, you have to use a program that is capable of overwriting the files with a series of random generated binary data for multiple times. Thus, the current contents of the files will be overwritten in a way that a recovery is practically unpossible. Wiping out method Before deletion all files are overwritten using one of the following algorithms Zero (1 Pass): Overwrite the files with zeros. Disk2vhd uses Windows’ Volume Snapshot capability, introduced in Windows XP, to create consistent point-in-time snapshots of the volumes you want to include in a conversion. You can even have Disk2vhd create the VHDs on local volumes, even ones being converted (though performance is better when the VHD is on a disk different than ones being converted). It will create one VHD for each disk on which selected volumes reside. It preserves the partitioning information of the disk, but only copies the data contents for volumes on the disk that are selected. This enables you to capture just system volumes and exclude data volumes, for example. Note: Virtual PC supports a maximum virtual disk size of 127GB. If you create a VHD from a larger disk it will not be accessible from a Virtual PC VM. OSFClone creates a forensic image of a disk, preserving any unused sectors, slack space, file fragmentation and undeleted file records from the original hard disk. Boot into OSFClone and create disk clones of FAT, NTFS and USB-connected drives! OSFClone can be booted from CD/DVD drives, or from USB flash drives. OSFClone can create disk images in the dc3dd format. The dc3dd format is ideal for computer forensics due to its increased level of reporting for progress and errors, and ability to hash files on-the-fly. Verify that a disk clone is identical to the source drive, by using OSFClone to compare the MD5 or SHA1 hash between the clone and the source drive. After image creation, you can choose from a range of compression options to reduce the size of the newly created image, increasing portability and saving disk space. Use OSFClone to save forensic meta-data (such as case number, evidence number, examiner name, description and checksum) for cloned or created images. Known Issues Issue: OSFClone may be unable to boot on some UEFI enabled computer systems. Features • Small • Portable • Secure Note from the author: I made a simple gui as a front end to the OpenSSL command line encryption tools, and as a little side project, wanted to make a password locker to integrate into that util. I never did, as I started using this util at work for database and web logins and the like, (I don't like password managers as browser plug-ins, any more than I like GPG email plug-ins), and so this remained just a tiny little password locker. Usage: It's pretty straight forward, the first time you run it, you will need to create a password to access the password database. After that, the same dialog will come up, but without the second "repeat password" line. Additionally, each time you login, you'll be asked if you're using an SSD, this makes a difference in how the database is closed. On a normal HDD, the "shred" utility is run to completely wipe the unencrypted database file, while on an SSD, it simply uses the UNIX / Linux "rm" command to remove the file. While shredding the file is far more secure, SSD's are far less secure by design; shred will accomplish nothing besides shortening the lifespan of the SSD. Karl M. Syring has made available a large suite of UNIX utilities ported to Windows, and two of these that are called by OSLC Password Locker are the aforementioned shred and rm, called by the Windows version as rm.exe and shred.exe. These must remain in the same directory as pwr-WIN.exe, or in the path.
