NEW: OUBLIETTE CAN NOW BE TRANSLATED

This version has built-in support for translating into other languages. A number of language packs are distributed with Oubliette. For details on using language packs and making your own translations, please see the file "language packs.txt" in subfolder "Locale". For more information, see the Localization forum at http://forum.tranglos.com. More language packs will be made available as soon as I receive translations. The latest language pack will be available at http://www.tranglos.com/free/files/oub_langpack.zip

See "history.txt" for detailed information on what's new in this version.

WARNING: ARE YOU UPGRADING OUBLIETTE?

Version 1.5 introduced a change in .OUB file format.
Files created or saved with version 1.5 or later
cannot be opened by earlier versions of Oubliette.
Please backup your existing version of Oubliette
and data files if you think you may want to revert
to a pre-1.5 version.

SAMPLE PASSWORD FILE

After you have installed Oubliette, you can open
a sample password file callsd sample.oub. To open
the file, supply the following password: "samplepass"
(without the quotes). This file is only a sample;
please create a new password file (File->New)
to store your personal information.

1. INTRODUCTION (What is Oubliette?)
-----------------------------------------------------------

Oubliette is a relatively simple program to store the
passwords you often use, in encrypted form. It employs
cryptographically strong encryption algorithms, such as
BLowfish and IDEA. All crypto-related algorithms used
in this program are either not patented, or are patented
but may be used free of charge in non-commercial software.

Oubliette allows you to store, retrieve, search and export
account records (including account name and associated user
name, password or passphrase, URL, email address and
free-form notes. It is highly customizable, with categories,
filtered views, clipboard support and more.

-----------------------------------------------------------
2. IMPORTANT RELEASE NOTES
-----------------------------------------------------------

In version 1.5 the file format has CHANGED. Please note that
versions of Oubliette earlier than 1.5 will not be able to
open files created by version 1.5 or later.

I welcome all bug reports and suggestions for enhancement;
please see section "Contacting the author" if you would like
to send me email. In general, I answer all email related to
the software you can download from the General Frenetics
Freeware page, but please give me two or three days.

Version 1.1: Please see file "NOPASS.TXT" for information
on the new function allowing access to data file without
being prompted for password.

-----------------------------------------------------------
3. NOTE ABOUT SECURITY
-----------------------------------------------------------

This program is designed to store passwords and other
potentially sensitive information (such as credit card
numbers, PINs, etc) in a reasonably secure manner. The
intention is to protect the information from a casual
snooper, such as a colleague, roommate, friend. The program
is NOT designed and is NOT guaranteed to protect against
any and all break-in attempts by dedicated attackers.
If you're hiding something from Da Mob or Da Man, you need PGP,
not Oubliette. While Oubliette uses ciphering algorithms
considered cryptographically strong (Blowfish, IDEA),
the author makes no claim as to the security the program offers,
and will not be liable for consequences arising from using or
misusing this program.

Note that the distribution package includes Delphi 3 source code,
so you can inspect it for any backdoors (there are none) or bugs
(I won't be surprised if you find one). You will be able to
modify and recompile the program for yourself, should you desire
to do so. I welcome all bug reports and suggestions for
enhancement, but I do NOT guarantee that any or all bugs will be
fixed or suggestions followed. This is a freeware program and I
can only dedicate so much time to it. That said, I am interested
in developing and improving the program.

Note also that in some countries or areas downloading, using or
developing software that uses strong cryptography may be illegal.
If this applies to you, then you take the whole responsibility
for whatever you do with the program.

Finally, remember to choose a non-obvious passphrase to protect
the encrypted Oubliette file where your passwords are stored.
Do NOT forget this passphrase, because without it you will never
be able to access the file contents! Repeat: there is no backdoor
or a workaround to open the file without your passphrase. Please
do not even send me email about forgotten passphrases, because
I won't be able to ever help you in such a case.

-----------------------------------------------------------
4. CRYPTOGRAPHY INFORMATION
-----------------------------------------------------------

This program uses parts of DCPCrypt, Delphi cryptographic
component package written by David Barton <davebarton@bigfoot.com>.
The package may be downloaded from http://www.cityinthesky.co.uk/cryptography.html

The program uses only such cryptographic algorithms (implemented
as parts of the DCPCrypt package) that are, at minimum, free for
non-commercial use.

Details of algorithms used:
---------------------------
Name Blowfish block cipher
Author Bruce Schneier (http://www.counterpane.com)
Patented No

Name IDEA block cipher
Author Xuejia Lia and James Massey
Patented Yes - free for non-comercial use

Name SHA1 hash algorithm
Author NSA

For more details please refer to the DCPCrypt documentation.

-----------------------------------------------------------
5. DOCUMENTATION CONTENTS
-----------------------------------------------------------
This package does not yet contain a fully-developed
help system. Enough documentation is included, however,
to get you started using and/or developing the program.
Please refer to the following list to locate the
information you need.

6. SOURCE CODE AVAILABILITY
-----------------------------------------------------------

As of version 1.5, source code is no longer distributed
with the executable package. Instead, source code may be
downloaded as a separate package. Full Delphi source code
is available from:
http://keynote.prv.pl
http://sourceforge.net/projects/oubliette/

-----------------------------------------------------------
7. TROUBLESHOOTING
-----------------------------------------------------------

I will very much appreciate any comments, feature requests,
and especially bug reports; but I cannot guarantee that
I will be able to solve any and all problems immediately.

Please ALWAYS specify the version of Oubliette you are using
as well as the version of Windows. It is not possible to
track down or fix any problems without this information.

NOTES:

If you write tom report a bug, please ALWAYS specify the
version number of Oubliette and the version of Windows
you are using. It is not possble to track down or fix
problems without this data.

Please do NOT send any irrelevant attachments (.vcf cards,
graphic backgrounds, "winmail.dat" files, etc). Attachments
are OK if they are directly relevant to a program you are
contacting me about: for instance, if you are reporting a bug,
you are welcome to attach a screenshot where the bug is apparent
(but please send GIF or JPG images only, no bitmaps unless they
are compressed!).

PGP signatures are welcome.

Please do not request that files be sent to you via email.
I have a rather slow and metered connection. Since all the
software I offer for downloading is free, I would really
like to avoid any additional costs. Whatever is available
can be downloaded directly from the website.

Thank you.
